University Catalog 2026-2027

Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at NC State University offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Science degree. Established in 1967, the Department is one of the oldest computer science departments in the nation.  The BS in Computer Science degree is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET and provides a rigorous technical foundation balanced with real-world application.

The NC State Advantage: Industry & Research.  Our curriculum goes beyond the classroom, incorporating industry partnerships and independent research and study projects.

  • Senior Design Center: All majors complete a team-based Senior Design project. Under the auspices of our award-winning Senior Design Center, student teams gain experience working jointly with project sponsors to deliver cohesive, high-quality software systems that solve real technical problems.
  • Undergraduate Research & Study: Students have the opportunity to participate in independent research and study projects mentored by faculty in areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computing education, high-performance systems, robotics, security, software engineering, and theory. These research projects serve as the starting point for completing the CSC Honors Program.

Curriculum & Specialization. The Computer Science curriculum teaches the underlying theory and practical skills needed to specify, design, implement, and deploy software systems.

  • Core Foundation: Students gain essential skills in computing theory, programming languages, software engineering, operating systems, secure systems, and the social/ethical dimensions of computing.
  • Advanced Electives: Students explore advanced areas including artificial intelligence, compilers, cryptography, cyber-physical systems, data science, game development, human-computer interface design, and networks.
  • Concentrations: We offer three specialized concentrations in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Game Development
  • Elective Tracks: Students may also pursue recognized elective tracks in Security, Robotics, and Entrepreneurship.

Student Life & Leadership. We foster a vibrant community where students develop leadership skills and engage in informal learning. Majors can join a variety of active student organizations, including a student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), HackPack, and Women in Computer Science (WiCS).

Additional Offerings. In addition to the BS degree, the Department of Computer Science offers a Minor in Computer Programming and a Post Baccalaureate Computer Programming Certificate for students in other disciplines.
