Italian Studies (Certificate)

A five-course program of study in Italian designed to allow students to develop proficiency in and knowledge of the Italian language, deepen their understanding of Italian culture, and gain greater insight into Italy and Italian-speaking communities worldwide. This program is open to undergraduate students in any major and class standing, as well as non-degree seeking students.

- A total of 15 semester hours is required. At least nine credit hours must be taken at NC State. The remaining credit hours may be taken through affiliate programs (e.g. Summer Study Abroad in Perugia – Italy), or approved non-NCSU study abroad programs.

Note: Students who place into WLIT 201 Intermediate Italian I, WLIT 202 Intermediate Italian II or WLIT 3** with the NC State placement test will be awarded three hours of retroactive credit for the previous course in the sequence upon completion of the course they placed into with a grade of C- or better on the first attempt. The awarding of retroactive credit does not apply to students who transfer in world language courses from other institutions.
Total Hours 15
- Students who place into WLIT 201 Intermediate Italian I or WLIT 202 Intermediate Italian II should consider pursuing the Italian Studies Minor instead of the certificate.
- There are no other required examinations, presentations, or external learning experiences.
- Satisfactory completion of the certificate program requires:
- completion of the coursework noted above;
- a grade of C-or better in all courses used to satisfy the certificate requirements;
- an overall GPA of 2.0 or better for all courses used to satisfy the certificate requirements.
