Japanese (Certificate)

A five-semester program of study in Japanese as a second language to allow undergraduate students to develop competence in and knowledge of the Japanese language, increased understanding and appreciation of Japanese and Japanese cultures.

Plan Requirements

  • A total of 15 semester hours is required; at least nine (9) credit hours must be taken at NC State. The remaining credit hours may be taken through affiliate programs (e.g. the UNC Language Exchange or an NC State Study Abroad program).

  • Students who place into WLJA 201 should pursue the Japanese Minor instead of the certificate.
  • There are no other required examinations, presentations, or external learning experiences.
  • Satisfactory completion of the certificate program requires:
    • completion of the coursework noted above
    • a grade of C-or better in all courses used to satisfy the certificate requirements
    • an overall GPA of 2.0 or better for all courses used to satisfy the certificate requirements
