Textiles encompass every aspect of our daily lives with applications in athletic apparel and equipment, outdoor gear, medicine, space, fashion, home textiles, personal safety, national defense, cosmetics, forensics, sustainability and clean energy. The textile industry is dynamic and ever-evolving with an increased emphasis being placed on the use of new technology. For example, imagine wearing clothes that have electronics incorporated within them that allow them to change colors, monitor your heart rate or track your location; soldiers wearing uniforms made from nano-fibers that protect them from biological and chemical agents; artificial arteries and biomedical textiles; or getting your apparel custom made in a matter of minutes through body scanning, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing.

The approximately 11,000 alumni of the Wilson College of Textiles hold diverse positions. Graduates of the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management go on to careers including design, retail buying, marketing, merchandising, supply chain management, product development and product management. Graduates of the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science go on to careers in material development for sneakers and outdoor gear, research and development, sourcing and supply chain management, quality control and more. Graduates of both departments also enroll in graduate degrees in these fields as well as professional degrees like medicine and analytics. These textile graduates bring their creativity to the design/development process and their management decision-making skills to the industry.

The college maintains one of the university’s best career success records: on average, at least 94% of our graduates find jobs in relevant fields or enroll in graduate school within six months of earning their bachelor's degree. Demand for textile graduates from NC State University is particularly strong, due mainly to the strength of the academic programs and the college’s strong working relationships with industry and government.
