Leadership: Cross Disciplinary Perspectives (Minor)

The Leadership: Cross Disciplinary Perspectives minor is a 15-hour minor that is designed for students who seek to gain greater knowledge and understanding of leadership perspectives from a variety of academic fields of study. The coursework is composed of courses grounded in theory, inquiry, and application. Students have the opportunity to select the specific courses which best fulfill their needs while maintaining a broad perspective on leadership across fields of study. Students in the minor may be preparing for graduate work or any field of study within the university.

Admissions

Students are required to meet with the program coordinator for the minor to discuss expectations established for the Leadership: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives minor and complete an application form. Completion requirements of the Minor include: a minimum of 15 required credit hours; a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in the minor; for grade coursework only; and four sub-discipline areas represented toward minor requirements, unless the student is selecting the SLC 450 Applied Leadership Skill-Building within an Internship Experience for six credits. If a student takes SLC 450 for six credits, the student is expected to take a course from each category, as well as the SLC 250 required course for a total of 15 credits. All other requirements remain the same to meet expectations for the minor. 

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this minor, students will be able to…

  • Identify leadership theories across disciplines
  • Assess how values and ethics influence leadership outcomes
  • Compare and contrast leadership practices and strategies across disciplines
  • Relate leadership theories and practices to real-life situations
  • Articulate the most appropriate disciplinary decision-making model in different situations
  • Explain the differences between leadership practices and theories across disciplines

Certification

The program coordinator will certify the minor prior to graduation. A minimum of 12 of the 15 required credit hours must be completed at through NC State. The Minor must be completed no later than the final semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification must be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State.

Plan Requirements

  • Completion of a minimum of 15 required credit hours.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in the minor.
  • Students may not take minor coursework on a credit only (pass/fail) or S/U basis.
  • Four college discipline areas need to be represented toward minor requirements.
  • The program coordinator will certify the minor prior to graduation.
  • A minimum of 12 of the 15 required hours must be completed at NC State.
  • The minor must be completed no later than the final semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification must be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State.
  • Students are required to take one 3hr course, SLC 250 Critical and Creative Decision Making Models.
  • For the minor, pre-requisites are NOT required in order to take a course. And, if you are unable to register for a course, please contact Dr. Debbie Acker at dlreno@ncsu.edu to assist in getting you registered for the desired class.
  • In addition, there are three categories related to leadership that students need to select courses: Cross-Functioning Teams; Ethics/Values; and Leadership.
  • Students are required to take 3hrs from each category accounting for 9 of the 12 credits and then one additional course from any of the categories, totaling 12hrs toward the minor.
  • For the remaining 3hrs, students can select from any of the three categories to meet requirements of the 15 credit hour minor. If a student takes SLC 450 for six credits, the student is expected to take a course from each category, as well as the SLC 250 required course for a total of 15 credits. All other requirements remain the same to meet expectations for the minor.
