Department of Accounting

Programs of Study

The Accounting Department prepares students for professional careers in accounting, consulting, business, government, and non-profit organizations. We offer Bachelor of Science and Master of Accounting degrees and provide an Accelerated pathway to earn both degrees in a reduced timeframe.

Our BS degree provides students a strong general business foundation and includes core classes in economics, finance, human resources, supply chain, marketing, business statistics, business law and ethics, and programming. Our accounting curriculum covers financial reporting, managerial accounting, tax, accounting information systems, and auditing. We also require two data analytics courses which provide deep coverage of current technologies and applications specific to accounting practice. In addition, we provide opportunities for high impact experiences, allowing students to earn credit through internships, practica, and specialized focus courses in accounting.

The Master of Accounting (MAC) program equips students with advanced, career-ready accounting expertise and skills for today’s fast-moving business world. Through specialized coursework, real-world application, and engagement with industry professionals, students strengthen their technical knowledge, analytical thinking, and strong decision-making skills needed to thrive in accounting. Graduates leave the program prepared to be successful in professional certifications, including the CPA, and ready to step confidently into leadership roles in a rapidly evolving profession.

Students in the BS in Accounting program have the option to apply to the Master of Accounting (MAC) through our ABM (Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s) pathway. This pathway allows qualified students  to double-count select graduate credits toward both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees, saving time and getting ahead faster.

Students who do not participate in ABM may apply to the MAC program and complete their degree in as little as one year. The program is offered in both online and campus formats, with flexible options for full-time and part-time learners.

We also offer an accounting minor which allows students to select courses that focus on specific areas of accounting such as analytics, systems, financial valuation, and tax. A minor in accounting is helpful in supplementing another degree, or preparing for a graduate program in Accounting.

Opportunities

Accountants identify, measure, and communicate information to assist people in making informed economic decisions. They help support all aspects of business operations, with the added benefit of having specialized knowledge and professional training. All organizations need accountants to assist with planning, performance evaluation, and regulatory compliance. The unique and broad accounting skillset translates to excellent career opportunities.

Curriculum and Degree Requirements

The accounting major requires that students complete 120 credits towards the degree. Additionally, accounting majors are subject to the university and college's residency requirements which require that students must complete at least half of the required major course requirements for the degree at NC State University.
